Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Kongkal Sangma said that he “intends” to launch the Saubhagya scheme in the state on April 20.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Rs 16,320-crore Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (Saubhagya) scheme aims to achieve universal household electrification in all parts of the country at a cost of Rs 16,320 crore, including gross budgetary support of Rs 12,320 crore from the government.
In a recent meeting with R K Singh, Union Minister of State (IC) Power and New & Renewable Energy, Meghalaya Chief Minister stated that “he intends to launch the Saubhagya scheme in Meghalaya on the 20th April, 2018, and invited Singh to be present. The union minister accepted the invitation and agreed to be present,” a power ministry official said.
The official added that Singh assured all possible support to Meghalaya. “RK Singh said that apart from the projects sanctioned for the state, if they required any additional projects for strengthening their distribution system, the proposal may be sent and thus will be sanctioned by the Government of India.”
Singh also referred to the target date for electrifying all the remaining villages. The Chief Minister and the Minister for Power, Meghalaya assured to electrify all the villages by the deadline, the official added. “Chief Minister also mentioned that if freight subsidy was provided for the coal meant for power plants, it might help in reducing the electricity rates in the state.”
