Light, Emitting Data!

Imagine a world where LED bulbs don’t just emit light, they also double up as wireless access points to provide Internet connectivity at speeds much higher than of Wi-Fi. By Mrinmoy Bhattacharjee

This is not science fiction; meet Li-Fi (Light-Fidelity) technology! It uses the light waves from LED light bulbs – that are rapidly replacing incandescent bulbs for their energy-efficiency and safety - to transmit data. So, it provides illumination and wireless data communication.


ISLE Elects K-Lite CEO Dilip Kumbhat as National President

The Indian Society of Lighting Engineers (ISLE), a professional body of illumination engineers, has elected Dilip Kumbhat of K-Lite Industries as its national president. He has replaced outgoing president Gulshan Aghi, managing director of Trilux India Pvt Ltd, following the elections to the governing body for a four-year term 2016–20 held recently, ISLE said in a press release.

Schneider to Partner NSDC for Training Electricians

Global energy management and automation specialist Schneider Electric is helping set up a Centre of Excellence for imparting electrician training to underprivileged youth in one hundred government-approved skill development centers. Schneider has signed an MoU with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and industry-led Power Sector Skill Council (PSSC) for this project.

Anchor Electricals Opens New Manufacturing Unit in Haridwar

Thane-headquartered Anchor Electricals Pvt Ltd (AEPL), subsidiary of Japan’s Panasonic Corporation, has commissioned its new manufacturing unit at Haridwar, Uttarakhand. The company has invested Rs 150 crore in the facility, which will have a monthly production capacity of 25 million units and is expected to double the installed capacity by FY 2020.  The plant will manufacture a complete range of wiring devices and switchgear, among other devices, to meet the increasing demand. Spread over 25,000sqm, the new unit is the company’s second biggest factory in the country. The environment-friendly facility has adopted many green features like the installation of LED lighting and use of treated sewage water.

EESL to Sell Energy-efficient Fans, LED Tubelights at Subsidy in Odisha

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) will distribute three lakh energy-efficient fans and 25 lakh LED tube lights in Odisha beginning October. Under the National Energy Efficient Fan and LED Tube Lights Programme, consumers will be able to buy energy-efficient fans and tube lights at subsidised rates. EESL is a joint venture of Power Ministry PSUs.

CRI Launches High End Pumps

Coimbatore-based CRI Pumps has forayed into a new business segment by launching 1,080 horse power pump for sewage and waste water treatment. With these high-end pumps it will be able to offer complete waste water treatment solutions for projects. This development is the outcome of its acquisition of Italian company Fabbrica Italiana Pompe Sommergibili Srl in 2014.

G Soundararajan, vice chairman, CRI Group, says, “The company expects sales of Rs 500 crore in 4-5 years in India and another Rs 1,000 crore from exports. We will make the high-powered pumps in our Coimbatore plant where we have already invested about Rs 100 crore.”

Goyal Asserts Power Availability & Affordability key for Sustainable Growth

Philips Lighting Launches New Sustainability Programme

The global lighting giant Philips Lighting has announced the launch of its new five-year sustainability programme ‘Brighter Lives, Better World’ at the recently-concluded Climate Week NYC. The company’s programme reflects its commitment to the universally agreed United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals for affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production as well as climate action, the company says.

This is the first time that Philips Lighting has set sustainability goals as a standalone listed company, building on the long legacy of Philips’ world class performance in sustainability and its EcoVision programmes.  


New Kid on the Block

Kolkata-based Century LED Ltd has entered the burgeoning domestic LED lighting market by unveiling products under its Magik brand just four months ago. But that isn’t holding back the company from dreaming big. It wants to be amongst the top three players in the next five years. Speaking with SEL, its business head Anirudh Kajaria avers the newly-born entity is one of the few to have forayed into the space on the back of a manufacturing unit, a fully equipped lab for R&D, and rigorous quality assessment. EESL Raises Domestic Bonds to Fund Energy-efficiency Projects

Power-PSUs promoted Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) has made its maiden issuance of bonds in the domestic market to fund energy-efficiency (EE) projects in the country. Domestic bonds worth Rs 500 crore were issued to investors on private placement basis at a coupon rate of 8.07% per annum. These bonds have been rated AA by ICRA and CARE. The maturity of the bonds ranges from 3.5 years to 7 years on STRPP basis. Meanwhile, Trust Investment Advisors is the sole arranger of the issue, Ministry of Power has said.
